Visions from Home
CALL FOR PHOTOS
The 8th Annual American Sociological Association’s Sociology of Development Conference
University of Notre Dame
October 17-19, 2019
We invite Notre Dame graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, staff, alumni, and affiliates to submit photos from Africa, Latin America, Asia, the Middle East, and indigenous territories worldwide. We hope these photos shed light on people, subjects, or places that are often misunderstood or left out of the development conversation.
We seek to subvert the Western gaze. We are particularly interested in photographers from developing countries and how you see your home nations.
In light of the theme of 2019’s Sociology of Development Conference, Development in Dialogue, we are seeking photo submissions that relate to the development research that will be showcased at the conference. The conference provides an opportunity for scholars and practitioners to engage with development challenges through the perspective of those most impacted. Photographs are a crucial component to this perspective.
Photos are more than a snapshot; they have the potential to tell stories and provide a glimpse into the complex human experience. At this year’s Sociology of Development Conference, we aim to transform photos into an experience, one that allows the viewer to better understand the context and relationships that make the art so impactful. This goal drives the theme for 2019’s photo exposition; Visions from Home.
You may submit up to 3 photographs for consideration. If your photograph is chosen, it will be presented in a gallery in the Hesburgh Center for International Studies that will be on display throughout the course of the conference. The featured photographers will be invited to the conference reception, where they will be recognized. All photo submissions will be considered according to artistic quality and how well they illustrate the theme of Visions from Home.
